SUMMARY
Leendert Bomme (1727-1788) was a cloth-mer
chant at Middelburg (Netherlands). In his leisure
time he collected and studied invertebrate organisms,
chiefly marine ones, when residing in his country
house at Oostkapelle, close to the North Sea. These
observations were published in a number of papers
in the Verhandelingen van het Zeeuwsch Genoot
schap der Wetenschappen. He acquired some fame
in being the first naturalist who described the boring
mechanism of the Oval piddock, Zirjaea crispata,
from stones of the construction of the sea dyke at
Westkapelle (1778).
From various letters and other documents, pu
blished and unpublished the author has written a
biography. It is followed by lists of (1) Bomme's
original publications and (2) the papers in which
his work is discussed.
