c jmmaries Zoom, to the East of the Schelde-Rijn con f The fencing off of the Marquisate of Bergen op nection, will affect the choice of alignment for the Oesterdam. e southern alignment of the Philipsdam e alignment of the southern section of the ilipsdam still has to be determined. Four ernative alignments have been proposed, ich are to be judged and compared as to c 'eria of a.o. planning, environment, traffic a d agriculture. T 9 most easterly proposed alignment appears r most favourable from both the agricultural a j environmental aspects. ing discussions with the population a fifth ssibility, still more to the East, evolved. e push-barge locks in the Philipsdam :he dam two locks are to be built, allowing ->ush tow consisting of four barges to pass ough. Around 1990 a third lock will be cessary. The locks shall be equipped with a .tern to combat salt and fresh water loads the fresh and salt basins linked to the I ks. e lock doors will be of the rolling door type, locking operations a system has been sloped making use of a high and a low ine basin, ducts, gates and pumping faci as. alignment of the Oesterdam and the I cing in of the Marquisate of Bergen op I ;>m I ween Tholen and Zuid-Beveland, in the i er part of the Oosterschelde, a separation is to be built. In this article the possible nment of this dam is discussed as to the i e of its connection with Tholen island, róssing of the Tholen and Marolle gullies its traffic and environmental repercus- s is. Discharge possibilities for the Zoommeer (Bordering Lake) The Zoommeer, created behind the Philips- dam and the Oesterdam, is meant to be a fresh water lake. In order to achieve the re quired salinities a discharge medium will be needed at the south-end of the lake. In this way the lake can be flushed with fresh water from the northern basin. A discharging channel through the narrow part of the peninsula of Zuid-Beveland, run ning partly parallel to the Schelde-Rijn connection, will make the discharge possible on the Westerschelde. The exact point where the discharging chan nel will join up with the Westerschelde still has to be determined. The effect of the water from the Kreekrak locks on the water quality of the Oosterschelde When passing through the Kreekrak locks, water of the Antwerp harbours and the Schelde river reaches the Oosterschelde. Tests have been made to determine to what extent the Oosterschelde is polluted by this discharge. One of the aspects that was established in a hydraulic model was the refreshment coef ficient of the water in the estuary. The environmental pollution caused by the Kreekrak locks is at present tolerable as a result of the exchange with seawater and the delution of the lock water. The improvement of the channel across Zuid- Beveland The channel across Zuid-Beveland is to be improved and the Wemeldinge locks are to be discontinued before 1985. The Hansweert locks are to be replaced by larger facilities suitable to accommodate push tows con sisting of fours barges. Probably a new entrance near Wemeldinge will be dredged, more to the East than the present one. The middle section of the channel is going to be widened towards the West. Near Flansweert the new locks are to be built easterly of the present locks. The dredged material is to be stored on a dumping place in the Oosterschelde, in such a way that the environment will not be af fected. 109
