Summaries
vend is.
waaraan een twee man dragende inspectiekorf
is bevestigd, waarmee men alle te inspecteren
delen kan bereiken.
Gates
The Oosterschelde barrier is a combination of
three sluices, which together form sixty-two
40m wide openings. At present the gates and
the operating mechanisms are in the process
of being installed. At the same time containers
with hydraulic apparatus and electric steering
mechanisms are being put into place.
The height of the gates depends on their
position in the breaches. At the edges they
measure 5,9m high, but in the deepest part of
the largest breach, the Roompot, gates
measuring 12m are required.
Construction-wise each gate consists of a
number of open-framed girders made of
tubular sections, which are manufactured in
eight different classes according to their
strength. A corrugated-formed water retaining
barrier is attached to this main bearing system,
as well as two box girders which have to
convey the gate load over onto the piers. Due
to their modular construction it has proved to
be possible to split up the manufacture of the
gates in a number of sub-contracts, and thus to
spread their production over the Dutch steel
industry. Welding procedures and tolerations
had to be strictly standardised for this purpose.
A measure of uncertainty always remains as
the theoretical distance between two piers can
never be fully realised. This is why the central
part of the gate is completed only when the
width of the cross-section is known, and it is
only at this point that it is attached to the box
girders. The inclination of the piers is
compensated for by an excess in the width of
the gate conveyor. The gate is also mounted
into the frames with rubber strips to prevent
oscillation.
The mounting of the gates is accomplished
with the assistance of the trestle 'Taklift IV'.
