Dit schrijven, hoe stichtelijk en vroom ook in zijn slot,
kon den kerkeraad allerminst voldoen. Het vertrouwen in den
persoon van Worsley was ten zeerste geschokt. Langzamer
hand was men tot de treurige ontdekking gekomen, dat
Worsley niet de man was, die hij behoorde te zijn. Dit
hadden de broeders trouwens nog onlangs (6 April) zelf ge
schreven aan ds. Sowdew te Rotterdamtoen zij hem om nadere
inlichtingen en bewijsstukken in deze netelige quaestie vroegen. T)

perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace, and the God of
love and peace shall be with youto Him are you fervently recommended by
your once beloved pastor and minister G. H. Worsley."
De kerkeraad schreef hem o. a.: „Mr. Wously is not the person
with (sic) he ought to be: but to more en (sic) fully proofs of the matter
she thinks it necessary that it pleased you to procure us the following documents".
Zij vragen er een zevental. Het is, alsof de Engelsche kerkeraad door de uit
drukking te bezigen„Worsley is not the personwhich he ought to be",
stilzwijgend tot de erkentenis komt, dat hij ds. Sowden die wel een der hoofd
personen is geweest in deze geruchtmakende zaakvroeger wel wat te zeer uit de
hoogte heeft behandeld en nu die vroegere houding tegenover hem zooveel mo
gelijk tracht goed te maken.
En wat antwoordt de Engelsche predikant van Rotterdam op dit schrijven
van den Middelburgschen kerkeraad
In een schrijven gedateerd 5 Mei, waarbij eene verklaring van mr. Elwor.-
thy, minister at South-Mol ton (in dato 11 April 1760) wordt over
gelegd, zegt ds. Sowden o. a. het volgende „Concerning the many proposals
in your lastall I have to say isthat most of the things you desire are
i npracti cableand if they were not, I would not undertake them, unless you
would engage to indemnify me lor the expencc. I find toothat- now all further
trouble is needless and that you see plainlywhat a wicked man you have had
to deal with. When the ministers in London first desired me to act in this
affair, I told them I uould in person apply privately to mr. Worsley, and
letting him know what proof lay against him, would persuade him to retire pri
vately. To this they replyed„by no means, Sir, for if you do, he will
borrow money secretly of different persons, and when he has
made a purse, will go off in their debt. It was this consideration,
(which) determined us to make it a public affair."
