to itself. All its ways are
steep, but at the same time
G£ This country is land-locked,
lies at several awkward angles
flat, scorched-earth flat,
compressed by heavy skies
through which the light insinuates,
Uj almost grudgingly. It is hard,
Q because of this, for any observer
to be sure of what she sees, or even
if she sees. Hard too to proceed
through terrain so intricately
convoluted (imagine a sheet of paper
0^ crumpled, but with careful malice).
It has a capital, both small and vast,
boasting an infinite number
of schools and hospitals that serve
its replicating cul-de-sacs.
Its population all have lost
their phones. There's no road out.
Deze regio is door land ingesloten,
ligt in enkele onhandige hoeken
tegen zichzelf aan. Al haar wegen zijn
steil, maar tegelijkertijd
plat, plat als verschroeide aarde,
samengedrukt door zwaar bewolkte luchten
waardoor het licht ongemerkt, bijna onwillig
binnendringt. Daardoor is het voor
elke waarnemer moeilijk zeker
te zijn van wat ze ziet, of zelfs
of ze iets ziet. Moeilijk om verder te gaan
over een zo ingewikkeld
in elkaar gedraaid terrein (stel je een vel papier voor
verfrommeld, maar met zorgvuldig venijn).
Ze heeft een hoofdstad, klein zowel als uitgestrekt,
die prat gaat op een buitensporig aantal
scholen en ziekenhuizen, die de zich almaar
herhalende cul-de-sacs bedienen.
Alle inwoners hebben hun telefoon
verloren. Een weg naar buiten is er niet.
