gaf daarmee een duidelijk signaal af aan de religieuze
groeperingen in zijn land.
Diplomatieke inspanningen en internationale
erkenning
In 2014 realiseerden De Drie Heiligen zich dat zij niet
alleen voor eigen parochie moesten preken maar dat
ze ook de international gemeenschap in de oplossing
van het conflict in hun land moesten betrekken. Ze
brachten bezoeken aan Europese hoofdsteden en de
Verenigde Staten en bezochten Ban Ki-moon en Paus
Franciscus. Hun diplomatieke inspanningen leidden
er toe dat de vn besloot een Vredeskorps naar de car
te sturen in september 2014 dat een positieve invloed
had op de toestand in het land. Voor al hun inspan
ningen voor vrede in hun land kregen ze een prijs van
Search for Common Ground op 13 november 2014 in
Washington waar die organisatie zijn hoofdkwartier
heeft. Het is een internationale non-profit organisatie
wier missie het is de manier waarop in de wereld met
conflict wordt omgegaan, te veranderen van tegen
strijdige benaderingswijzen naar gemeenschappelijke
oplossingen.
De Drie Heiligen hebben een significante bijdra
ge geleverd aan het fenomeen zonder precedent van
samenwerking van hulp- en ontwikkelingsorgani
saties met uiteenlopende religieuze achtergronden.
Het maakte deel uit van de visie van de bevordereing
van sociale cohesie door interreligieuze humanitaire
programmering, die een afspiegeling is van de daden
en boodschappen van Interfaith Peace Platform. Dat
platform was een drijvende kracht in het vestigen van
werkverhoudingen tussen Moslim en Katholieke orga
nisaties in antwoord op de crisis in de car.
De activiteiten van de De Drie Heiligen liepen in de
kijker. Dat blijkt uit hun verkiezing als behorende tot
de 100 meest invloedrijke mensen van de wereld door
Time Magazine in 2014. Het jaar daarop kregen ze
twee prestigieueze prijzen. Op de Menselijkheidsdag
(19 augustus) kregen ze de Sierjo Viera de Milo Prijs.
Deze prijs geeft humanitaire hulpverleners en zij die
hun leven verloren terwijl ze werkzaam waren in het
veld, erkenning. Op Antioorlogsdag (1 september),
kregen ze de Aachener Friedenspreis die mensen eert
die vrede bevorderen in oorlogssituaties.

a certain extent.
The Three Saints also played a roll in the removal of
Djotodia on 5 April 2014 and his replacement by Catherine
Sambi-Panza (a Christian). However, this in turn led to
the prosecution of Muslims by the anti-Balaka militia.
Archbishop Dieudonné Nzapalainga gave shelter to Imam
Omar Kobine Layama in his own house, as a clear sign to
all religious communities.
Diplomatic efforts and international recognition
In 2014 the Three Saints realized that they should not
only preach for their own herd but should also involve the
international community in the resolution of the conflict in
their country. They started on a tour of European capi
tals and the United States, visiting leaders such as Ban
Ki-moon and Pope Francis. Their diplomatic efforts led to
the deployment of a un Peacekeeping Force in September
2014, which had a positive impact on the situation in the
car. For all their peace-making efforts they received a
prize from Search for Common Ground on 13 November
2014 in Washington, where this organization is head
quartered. It is an international non-profit organization
whose mission is to transform the way the world deals
with conflict, away from adversarial approaches toward
cooperative solutions.
The Three Saints contributed significantly to a hitherto
exceptional phenomenon: aid and humanitarian organ
izations with different religious backgrounds working
together. It was part of the vision of promoting social
cohesion through inter-religious humanitarian program
ming, mirroring the actions and messages of the Interfaith
Peace Platform, that was a driving factor in establishing
working relationships between Muslim and Catholic aid
organisations in response to the crisis in the car.
That the activities of The Three Saints did not go un
noticed can be inferred from the fact that Time Magazine
placed them among the 100 Most Influential People in the
world in 2014. The following year they received two pres
tigious awards. On World Humanities Day (19 August)
they received the Sierjo Viera de Milo Award. The award
recognizes humanitarian aid workers and those who
lost their lives while active in the field. On Anti War Day
(1 September), they received the Aachener Friedenspreis,
which honours people who promote peace in wartime
situations.

Pauselijke zegen
De kroon op het werk van De Drie Heiligen was zeker
het tweedaags bezoek van Paus Francicus op 29 en
30 november 2015 aan de car, die hun boodschap die
zij de afgelopen drie jaar hadden uitgedragen, thuis
bracht. Dominee Nicolas Guérékoyame-Gbangou zei:
'De werldleiders moeten meer betrokken zijn en meer
passie tonen voor hun burgers en ze moeten ook meer
creativiteit en vastberadenheid tonen.' Paus Franciscus
die voor de eerste keer op bezoek was in een land waar
een oorlogssituatie heerste, toonde die moed zeker en
zijn bezoek had het miraculeuze effect dat het bijna
volledig rustig werd in de car.
De Drie Heiligen moeten in de wolken zijn
geweest. Hun droom de car te veranderen in een
plek waar de hele bevolking, met wat voor religieuze
achtergrond dan ook, in vrede en harmonie kan leven,
is hiermee zeker een stap dichterbij gebracht. De
Vrijheid van Godsdienst Prijs eert niet allleen deze
moedige mannen maar zal ook instrumenteel zijn
om de ideeën van de Vier Vrijheden in het hart van de
Centraal Afrikanen te planten. De Drie Heiligen zijn
van plan, volgens Dieudonné Nzapalainga 'afdelingen
van het Interfaith Peace Platform "overal ter werld" op
te richten.'
Papal blessings
The Three Saints' crowning glory was certainly the two-
day visit to the car by Pope Francis (29-30 November
2015), who brought home the message they had been
spreading in the past three years. Pastor Nicolas
Guérékoyame-Gbangou said: 'World leaders should be
more committed and should show more passion for
their citizens and they must show more creativity and
endurance.' Pope Francis, on his first visit to a country
at war, certainly did show that courage and his presence
had the miraculous effect of almost completely appeas
ing the situation in car.
The Three Saints must have been over the moon.
Their dream of turning their country into a place where
the whole population, no matter its religious back
ground, can live in peace and harmony, certainly is a
step closer. The Freedom of Worship Award not only
pays tribute to these courageous men, it will also help
to further anchor the ideas of the Four Freedoms in the
heart of the Central Africans. The Three Saints are plan
ning, according to Dieudonné Nzapalainga 'to found
branches of the Interfaith Peace Platform everywhere in
the world.'
