Van't Rosenvelt
Het is niet honderd procent zeker, maar naar
alle waarschijnlijkheid komen de voorouders
van zowel Theodore, zijn nicht Eleanor en hun
verre neef Franklin uit Oud-Vossemeer op
Tholen. In dit dorp stond van de jaren dertig tot
begin jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw Huize
Roosevelt op de plek van een boerderij die in de
zeventiende eeuw werd bewoond door een Van
't Rosevelt. De stamvader van de Amerikaanse
Roosevelt-familie is vermoedelijk in de zeven
tiende eeuw van het eiland Tholen geëmigreerd
naar Nieuw Amsterdam, het huidige New York.
There is not one hundred percent certainty
that the ancestors of the Roosevelt hail from
Oud-Vossemeer where there was a house called
Huize Roosevelt, which stood on the very same
spot as a farm in the seventeenth century that
was inhabited by the Van 't Rosevelt family.
The forefather of the American Roosevelt
family probably moved from what was then
the Isle of Tholen (where Oud-Vossemeer
is located) to New Amsterdam, present-day
New York.

(en de oneven in New York) uitgereikt waarbij meestal
nazaten van Roosevelt aanwezig zijn.
Mersie ziet de ceremonie rondom de uitreiking
van de Four Freedom Awards als een belangrijk
netwerkmoment. Als hét moment om het belang van
de mensenrechten uit te dragen. Mersie wil de ceremo
nie naar een Europees niveau tillen en toegankelijker
maken voor een breder publiek. De foundation wil
de aandacht voor de Four Freedoms niet bij die ene
dag in de twee jaar laten. De organisatie van 'Four
Freedoms door het jaar heen' groeit. Elk jaar zijn er
meer activiteiten naast de uitreiking van de prijzen.
Tussen 29 maart en 5 mei 2016 vinden in negen pro
vincies in Nederland diverse Vrijheidscolleges plaats
bijvoorbeeld. De lezingen hebben de Vier Vrijheden
van Franklin D. Roosevelt als thema. In Zeeland
worden de lezingen verzorgd door Vincent Bijlo,
Henk van Houtum, Zihni Özdil en André Manuel.
Er is in mei een internationaal cartoonfestival in de
zb, Planbureau en Bibliotheek van Zeeland. Daaraan
voorafgaand zullen leerlingen op verschillende mid
delbare scholen cartoons tekenen naar aanleiding van
de Vier Vrijheden en praten of er grenzen zijn aan de
vrijheid van meningsuiting.
Roosevelt Study Center en
University College Roosevelt
Franklin D. Roosevelt bracht halverwege zijn tweede
termijn zijn enorme collectie boeken en papieren op
orde en stichtte de Roosevelt Library op zijn land
goed in Hyde Park. Ter ere van de familiebanden
met Zeeland, kreeg de provincie Zeeland delen uit
die bibliotheek in boekvorm, op microfilm en op
microfiches geschonken. Het Roosevelt Study Center
(rsc), beheerder van deze bestanden, is in 1986
geopend ten behoeve van studenten Amerikanistiek in
Europe. Tot 2010 werd het rsc gesubsidieerd door het
Roosevelt Institute maar die steun is stop gezet. Kees
van Minnen, directeur van het rsc: 'Het Roosevelt
Institute is een andere richting opgegaan en functio
neert nu meer als een politieke denktank. Ik betreur
dat.' Ook de provincie Zeeland heeft de subsidie
gekort. De bezuinigingen hebben ernstige gevolgen
gehad voor de personele bezetting van het rsc. Toch
hoopt hij dat er voor zijn instituut weer betere tijden
aanbreken en dat het als onderzoek- en conferentiecen
trum kan blijven voortbestaan.

Mersie sees the ceremony as an important moment
for networking, but certainly also as the moment to
propagate the importance of human rights. Mersie
wants to upgrade the ceremony to a European level
and at the same time make it more accessible for a
wider audience. The foundation wishes to bring the
Four Freedoms more in the public eye all year round
and not just one day every two years. Every year there
is an increase in the number of activities. Between 29
March and 5 May 2016, for example, so-called Freedom
lectures are delivered in nine provinces throughout
the Netherlands. The Four Freedoms are the theme
of these lectures. Vincent Bijlo, Henk van Houtum,
Zihni Özdil and André Manuel will deliver the lectures
in Zeeland. In May, an international cartoon festival is
being organized by the Zeeland Library in Middelburg.
Prior to that event, high-school pupils will draw car
toons related to the Four Freedoms and will have
discussions on whether the freedom of speech has
its limits.
Roosevelt Study Center and
University College Roosevelt
Franklin D. Roosevelt systemized his enormous collec
tion of books and papers and founded the Roosevelt
Library on his Hyde Park country estate. To honour
his Zeeland ancestry he donated part of his library,
both books and micro film recordings to the province
of Zeeland. The Roosevelt Study Center (rsc) acts as
caretaker and was founded in 1986 to cater for stu
dents specializing in American history in Europe. The
rsc was initially subsidized by the Roosevelt Institute,
but it stopped its support in 2010. Kees van Minnen,
Director of the rsc: 'The Roosevelt Institute decided
to change its course and now acts as a political think
tank organisation. I really regret that.' The province of
Zeeland also cut part of its subsidies. These cuts had a
serious impact on the institute's personnel formation.
Nevertheless, Van Minnen hopes that his institute will
see better times and that it will be able to continue to
exist as a research and conference centre.
Barbara Oomen has busied herself throughout
her career with the promotion of human rights. She
published widely on the relationship between law,
culture and society. Until August 2016 she will be the
Dean of the University College Roosevelt (ucr), which
