Theodore Roosevelt 18581919) was een progressieve hervormer
en beschermer van groter natuurparken in de vs. Teddyberen hebben
hun naam aan hem te danken. Hij streefde naar een belangrijke rol in de
wereldpolitiek voor de vs. Voor zijn bemiddeling in de Russisch-Japanse
oorlog (1904-1905) ontving hij in 1906 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede. Hij
bepleitte een internationaal hof van arbitrage, een League of Peace in Den
Haag en een internationale politiemacht.
Barbara Oomen maakt zich al haar hele carrière sterk
voor de bevordering van de mensenrechten. Ze heeft
vele publicaties op haar naam staan over de relatie
tussen recht, cultuur en de samenleving. Tot augustus
2016 is ze decaan van het in 2004 opgerichte University
College Roosevelt (ucr). De naam Roosevelt is niet
zomaar gekoppeld aan de ucr. 'Studenten van het ucr
worden opgeleid tot kritische intellectuelen. Door het
internationale karakter van het ucr doen studenten
niet alleen kennis op, maar worden ze ook voorbereid
op een toekomst als wereldburger', aldus Oomen.
Mensenrechten maken onderdeel uit van het curricu
lum. Niet alleen bij recht, maar ook bij andere vakken
zoals kunst en journalistiek. 'Mensenrechten komen
terug in drie strategische domeinen: onderwijsexperti-
se, research en wereldburgerschap,' zegt Oomen.
Roosevelt City
Al zit een volledig samengaan van rsc, ucr en de
Roosevelt Foundation er niet in, toch bundelen de drie
grote Rooseveltinstellingen hun krachten steeds vaker
en organiseren ze gezamenlijk activiteiten zoals de
Roosevelt Triangle Lecture in januari, die werd ver
zorgd door David B. Woolner in de Burgerzaal van het
Middelburgse stadhuis (zie artikel op pagina 32-49).
Voor de zesde International Human Rights Education
Conference in december 2015 kwamen tweehonderd ex
perts en studenten uit de hele wereld naar Roosevelt City
om het thema 'Translating Roosevelt's Four Freedoms
to Today's World' te bespreken. 'Het is ontzettend
belangrijk dat onderwijzers leren hoe ze het onder
werp mensenrechten aan moeten kaarten op school',
zegt Barbara Oomen die de conferentie coördineerde.
Een uitvloeisel ervan is dat hz University of Applied
Sciences en University College Roosevelt met ingang
van het nieuwe studiejaar 2016/17 in de lerarenoplei
ding meer aandacht gaan besteden aan mensenrechten.
De samenwerking tussen ucr, rsc en de Roosevelt
Foundation is een uitstekend fundament voor de ver
sterking van het merk Roosevelt in Zeeland. De foun
dation wil graag in de Randstad meer aandacht vragen
voor de Four Freedoms Awards en organiseert op
22 april, de dag na de uitreiking van de Four Freedoms
Awards, een programma in het Haagse Vredespaleis
waarbij enkele laureaten lezingen verzorgen. Die bij
eenkomst wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met
het The Hague Institute of Global Justice.
was founded in 2004. It is by no means a coincidence
that the name Roosevelt was connected to the college.
'Ucr students are trained to be critical intellectuals. At
the ucr students do not only gather knowledge but are
also trained to become citizens of the world', according
to Oomen. Human rights are not only part of the law
curriculum, but also of the art and journalism curricula.
Human rights are embedded in the three strategic do
mains: education expertise, research and world citizen
ship' Oomen says.
Roosevelt City
Although a full integration of rsc, ucr and the
Roosevelt Foundation is not foreseen, they do team
up on a regular basis and they organise joint activities
such as the Roosevelt Triangle Lecture in January, which
was delivered by David B. Woolner in the Burgerzaal of
the Middelburg City Hall (see article on page 32-49).
At the sixth International Human Rights Education
Conference in December 2015 two hundred experts and
students from all over the world gathered in Roosevelt
City to discuss 'Translating Roosevelt's Four Freedoms
to Today's World'. 'It is of enormous importance that
teachers learn how to treat the subject of human
rights in their classrooms', according to Oomen who
coordinated the conference. As a consequence the hz
University of Applied Sciences and ucr have introduced
human rights in their teachers training programmes as
of the academic year 2016/17.
The cooperation between ucr, rsc and the
Roosevelt Foundation is an excellent framework for
the strengthening of the Roosevelt brand in Zeeland.
The Foundation wants to raise the profile of the Four
Freedoms Awards in The Hague and therefore, on April
22, it is organising a programme in the Peace Palace in
The Hague, a meeting at which several of the laureates
will lecture. The meeting is organized in cooperation
with the The Hague Institute of Global Justice.
Branding Roosevelt
Not only the above-mentioned institutions but also
companies and organisations in Zeeland connect to
the Roosevelt brand. In 2015 The Roosevelt opened its
doors in Middelburg. Martin van der Louw, director
of the hotel, states hat he chose the name because of
the Roosevelts' ties with Zeeland and also due to the
good name of other Roosevelt hotels in New York and
Paris. 'Storytelling is important nowadays', he explains.

Niet alleen bovengenoemde instellingen, maar
steeds vaker haken ondernemers en organisaties in
Zeeland aan bij het merk Roosevelt. In Middelburg
bestaat sinds 2015 hotel The Roosevelt. Martin van
der Louw, directeur van het hotel, zegt dat hij de naam
van het hotel heeft gekozen vanwege de band van de
Roosevelts met Zeeland en de goede naam van andere
Roosevelt hotels in New York en Parijs. 'Story telling
is tegenwoordig heel belangrijk,' licht hij toe. Zo is de
opvallende kleur groenblauw (aquamarijn) gekozen
voor de aankleding van het hotel omdat het de favorie
te kleur was van Eleanor Roosevelt en in de wijnbar
van het hotel kun je de favoriete boeken van Franklin
D. Roosevelt lezen.
Het Bevrijdingsmuseum in Nieuwland heeft
grootse uitbreidingsplannen. Achter het huidige
museum komt het Bevrijdingspark Zeeland, een park
dat de geschiedenis van Zeeland tijdens de Tweede
Wereldoorlog belicht waarbij de Slag om de Schelde
centraal zal staan. In de opbouw zijn typische Zeeuwse
elementen als water, strand en dijken voorzien. In het
park wordt de unieke noodkerk uit Ellewoutsdijk gere
construeerd en er zal een Rooseveltpaviljoen komen.
Tholen kan vanwege de historische banden met
de Roosevelts uiteraard niet ontbreken in het aan
zwellende branding proces. Sinds 1992 staat in Oud-
Vossemeer het kunstwerk De Vier Vrijheden, van de
grensverleggende kunstenaar Nico van den Boezem.
Nu worden verdere stappen gezet. In het Toeristisch

The Liberation Museum in Nieuwland has impres
sive expansion plans. In the vicinity of the present mu
seum a liberation park is foreseen, which will visualize
the history of Zeeland during the Second World War,
especially the Battle for the River Schelde. Its construc
tion has typical Zeeland elements such as water, beach
es, and dykes. Also a Roosevelt pavilion will be erected
and the unique provisional church originally situated in
Ellewoutsdijk will be reconstructed as well as.
Due to its historic ties with the Roosevelt family
the city of Tholen cannot fall behind in this growing
branding process. In 1992 the famous Dutch artist Nico
van den Boezem positioned his Four Freedoms mon
ument. In the touristic development plan 2013/16 the
city of Tholen accorded certain themes to its residential
areas. The area Oud-Vossemeer was given the theme
'Roosevelt'. The Roosevelt Foundation Oud-Vossemeer
has decided to create a Roosevelt Information Center
and the Four Freedoms will be its main focus. The
monumental manor on the village square, built in 1767,
will house it. Van 't Rosevelt was one of the lords of the
manor, and the Roosevelt coat of arms still adorns the
fire-place of the manor. Her Royal Highness Princess
Beatrix will officiate at the opening of the centre on
20 April. 'We founded it because of the interest shown
for Oud-Vossemeer by the Roosevelt Institute and the
