De internationale Four Freedoms Award wordt
op 21 april 2016 in Middelburg uitgereikt aan
dr. Angela Merkel (1954). Angela Merkel groeide
op in Templin, een kleine stad in Oost-Duitsland.
Na de vreedzame revolutie in 1989 trad Merkel toe
tot de politieke burgerbeweging 'Demokratischer
Aufbruch', die in 1990 opging in de Christelijk
Democratische Unie (cdu). Ze is de politiek leider
van de cdu sinds 2000 en de Bondskanselier van
Duitsland sinds 2005. Ze is de eerste vrouw en de
eerste burger van de voormalige ddr, die deze
functies bekleedt.
Merkel heeft een cruciale rol gespeeld in de aanpak
van de financiële crisis in de Europese Unie. Zij
leidde zij de onderhandelingen voor een diplomatieke
oplossing en de-escalatie van het conflict in Oekraïne
(vredesbesprekingen Minsk en overeenkomst
van Minsk) in het belang van vrede en veiligheid
in Europa. Ze toont groot moreel leiderschap als
Bondskanselier van alle Duitsers ongeacht geloof en
etnische achtergrond tegenover de opkomst van de
anti-Islam beweging Pegida in 2014. In de huidige
vluchtelingencrisis is Merkel toegewijd aan de
humanitaire plicht van Europa om diegenen op te
vangen die op de vlucht zijn voor oorlog en conflict in
het Midden-Oosten, Afrika en Azië en aan de aanpak
van de oorzaken van deze crisis door zich in te zetten
voor vrede in Syrië en in de regio.

ed to Dr. Angela Merkel (1954) on 21 April 2016 in
Middelburg, The Netherlands. Angela Merkel was
raised in Templin, a small town in East Germany.
After the peaceful revolution in the autumn of 1989
Merkel joined the opposition political movement called
'Demokratischer Aufbruch' (Democratic Awakening),
which merged with the Christian Democratic Union
(cdu) in 1990. She has been the leader of the cdu since
2000 and the Chancellor of Germany since 2005. She
is the first woman and the first former citizen of the
German Democratic Republic to hold either office.
Merkel has played a crucial role in managing the
financial crisis in the European Union. She led the
negotiations to reach a diplomatic solution (de-
escalation) in the Ukrainian crisis (Minsk peace talks
and Minsk agreement) in the interest of peace and
security in Europe. She shows great moral leadership
as Chancellor of all Germans regardless of faith and
ethnicity in the face of the start of the anti-Islam move
ment Pegida (Patriotic Europeans Against Islamisation
of the West) in 2014. In the current migrant and refugee
crisis Merkel is committed to Europe's humanitarian
duty to protect those fleeing war and conflict in the
Middle East, Africa and Asia and to tackle the causes of
the crisis by working for peace in Syria and the region.
